Advanced Mezzanine Cards are printed circuit boards, also known as PCBs, that follow a specification of the PCI Industrial Computers Manufacturers Group. There are now over a 100 companies participating.

AMC.x is the the official specification designation for AdvancedMC which is targeted to requirements for the next generation of carrier grade communications equipment. This series of specifications are designed to work on any carrier card and plug into a backplane directly as defined by MicroTCA specifications.

Micro TCA

AdvancedMC cards are considered powerful enough that there are situations where the processing functionality is the only requirement. The MicroTCA standard is targeted at supplying a COTS chassis that will allow AMC cards to function without any AdvancedTCA carrier card.

Versions of MicroTCA with fewer AdvancedMC card slots are informally known as NanoTCA and PicoTCA.

Custom Paint Job

Our latest TLX has a great option for getting our famous custom-painted looks at a huge cost savings: lid only painting. You still choose the color from any automotive paint made, and a contrasting color for the Falcon logo. The top “lid” of the laptop gets the paintwork, but the rest of the system stays a standard black plastic. It’s not quite as much “Wow!” as a fully painted TLX, but it’s a great way to get the custom Falcon look you want for a lot less.

We can match your favorite automobile, or we can match your favorite shirt. Paints are available in various metallic flake levels, pearl coats and even color-shifting paints. MSI or Microstar International have recently released the new X58 based motherboard upon the public and were kind enough to send us a sample motherboard to present you with yet another full X58 review.

The motherboard up for today’s review is the MSI X58 Platinum Edition which currently sits at the entry level, below the higher-end Platinum SLI Edition and flagship Eclipse. It appears all three motherboards are aimed at different sectors and pockets so while the X58 Platinum does not support SLI or come with an XFI sound card, it is much cheaper. So unless you need those luxuries, the Platinum would be the sensible choice! However, the ‘basic’ Platinum does have Crossfire support, triple channel DDR3 support and of course support for Intel’s latest Core i7 Nehalem processor, therefore I would be mad to accuse the MSI X58 Platinum of being basic.

The Scorpion range is based on two different brands previous laptops, the Sager NP2090 and the Compal IFL90. The Sager and the Compal is essentially the same machine just assembled by different companies. Sager managed to box up the finished product without the super clear WSXGA+ screen for a little cheaper but offered a shorter warranty. The Scorpion has also opted for the same basic components including the WSXGA+ screen, and offers 1-3 warranties depending on the specific part.

The Scorpions are no doubt geared for gaming. They come with powerful processors, high performance graphics cards, ample RAM and super clear screens, the perfect combination for any avid game or graphics buff.

All five Scorpions come with a 15.4 WSXGA+ LCD screens with a resolution of 1280 x 800, the picture is glossy and clear and makes for a good gaming or movie experience. There are also a few other components that remain the same throughout the range. An 8X DVD ± R/RW/ 4X +DL Super-Multi Drive can be found on all five models as well as a NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 512MB graphics card.

The NVIDIA GeForce Graphics Card is a powerful graphics card that has support for both Microsoft DirectX 10 and DirectX 9 for, unparalleled levels of graphics realism and performance. The GeForce 8600 also runs Windows Vista 32-Bit with ease and the PureVideo HD2 technology provides excellent Blu-ray and HD DVD picture quality.

A Realtek ALC883 7.1+2 HD soundcard is at the heart of the sound quality, the high performance Digital-Audio Converters ensure high quality recording and processing. Supporting 44.1k, 48k, 96k and 192 kHz sample rates this card is capable of music production and 7.1 playback for the digital theater experience.

There a few other handy little features that can be found throughout the range. A Power USB enables the systems USB ports to supply your external devices without turning your notebook on. There is also a Quick Charge button which when turned on, lets you charge 70% in an hour when the battery is empty and your system is off.
