The standard aluminum electro-static trackpad has been replaced with a new glass Multi-Touch trackpad, which provides 40 percent more tracking area than before. Swipe with four fingers to show your desktop, view all open windows, or switch applications. The 15-inch MacBook Pro now includes a newly engineered lithium-polymer battery that that lasts up to 7 hours on a single charge thanks to advanced chemistry, intelligent monitoring of the system and battery, and Adaptive Charging technology. The battery is built right into the computer, eliminating the space-consuming mechanisms and housings that standard removable batteries require. This non-removable battery also provides a longer battery lifespan of up to 1000 recharges–meaning fewer depleted batteries and less waste, which is better for the environment.

Giving it a lifespan of up to 1000 recharges required breakthroughs in battery technology. Apple electro-chemists developed advanced chemistry that maintains the battery’s charging capabilities longer than ever. And while most notebooks wear down their batteries by charging them at a constant rate, the 15-inch MacBook Pro takes a different approach. Using an Apple-developed technology called Adaptive Charging, a microchip on the battery constantly communicates with the computer to determine the optimal way to charge its cells, adjusting the current up and down depending on a variety of conditions. Combined, these advancements offer a dramatic improvement in battery lifespan: more than three times the lifespan of typical notebook batteries–up to five years.

Unless you’ve been under rock for the last year, you’ll have no doubt heard about Apple’s highly-anticipated tablet PC, the iPad. For those who venture out from under that rock periodically, but not for the last week – the iPad has been officially launched.

Unveiled by the man Steve Jobs himself at Apple’s Keynote demo, 27th Jan, the iPad wowed some, but disappointed others. But let’s bear in mind that not many of these critics and reviewers actually have their hands on a real live Apple iPad, for that, most of us will just have to wait until March for the standard WiFi model, or until April for the 3G and WiFi version.

The iPad is incredibly sleek, measuring just 9.56 x 7.47 x 0.5 inches, with a 9.7-inch display. It’s got a fully capacitive TFT LCD multitouch screen with a native resolution of 1024 x 768.

Under the hood is Apple’s new A4 ARM processor, which, through its incredibly efficient power usage promises to decode HD video for up to 10 hours. The iPad will connect to the internet and other networks via 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and on the highest end models, 3G. It comes with Apple’s classic accelerometer, a compass, built-in speaker, a mic, and a standard 30-pin connector.

Both WiFi and 3G models are available with either 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of flash storage. The iPad will be available unlocked to use with a carrier of your choosing, and there are already a couple of data plans available though AT&T. An unlimited connection, which includes being able to use AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots for free, will cost $30 a month with the option to cancel at anytime. The other plan is for 250MB of data priced at $15 – not bad considering it usually costs around $60 for unlimited data on a laptop.

With its crisp, vibrant display and unique software features, iPad is an extraordinary way to enjoy and share your photos. The iPad is incredibly sleek, measuring just 9.56 x 7.47 x 0.5 inches, with a 9.7-inch display. It’s got a fully capacitive TFT LCD multitouch screen with a native resolution of 1024 x 768.

Under the hood is Apple’s new A4 ARM processor, which, through its incredibly efficient power usage promises to decode HD video for up to 10 hours.

The iPad will connect to the internet and other networks via 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and on the more expensive models, 3G.

It comes with Apple’s classic accelerometer, a compass, built-in speaker, a mic, and a standard 30-pin connector.

Both WiFi and 3G models are available with either 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of flash storage.

The iPad will be available unlocked to use with a carrier of your choosing, and there are already a couple of data plans available though AT&T.

An unlimited connection, which includes being able to use AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots for free, will cost $30 a month with the option to cancel at anytime. The other plan is for 250MB of data priced at $15 – not bad considering it usually costs around $60 for unlimited data on a laptop.

Downside of iPad

On the downside, there are rumors that the iPad can not multitask, however I’m still unclear as to why exactly this is. Perhaps the way the OS docks and hides running applications leads one to believe this? On the other hand it could be true.

The bezel is also noticeably fat, but this is surely to stop the thumbs from making any accidental commands on the touch screen?

The discussion about the iPad’s pros and cons could go on for ever, but until the general public get their hands on the product, it’s difficult to judge if Apple’s tablet will revolutionize computing, or if it will simply become a gadget for Apple fanboys…..and girls.

Intel Xeon Nehalem CPU

Many quad-core processors are composed of two separate dies, which means some cached data has to travel outside the processor to get from core to core. That’s an inefficient way to access information. Enter the Quad-Core Intel Xeon Nehalem processor. Its single-die, 64-bit architecture makes 8MB of fully shared L3 cache readily available to each of the four processor cores. The result is fast access to cache data and greater application performance. Combine that with the other technological advances and you get a Mac Pro that’s up to 1.9x faster than the previous generation.

Memory bottlenecks begone.

System memory is often connected to a processor through a separate I/O controller. But each Intel Xeon Nehalem processor features an integrated memory controller another leap forward for workstation system architecture. By connecting memory directly to the processor, the new Mac Pro processors have faster access to data stored in memory, and memory latency is reduced by up to 40 percent.

The integrated memory controller, along with fast 1066MHz DDR3 ECC SDRAM, also gives Mac Pro up to a 2.4x increase in memory bandwidth over previous generations.2 More bandwidth allows for more data to be fed to the processor faster, helping each core spend its time processing data, not waiting for information to arrive. And Error Correction Code (ECC) corrects single-bit errors and detects multiple-bit errors automatically. That’s especially important in mission-critical and compute-intensive environments.

Mac Pro Streamlined Architecture

The new Mac Pro introduces Turbo Boost: a dynamic performance technology that automatically boosts the processor clock speed based on workload. If you’re using an application that doesn’t need every core, Turbo Boost shuts off the idle cores while simultaneously increasing the speed of the active ones, up to 3.33GHz on a 2.93GHz Mac Pro.

The new Intel Xeon Nehalem processors support Hyper-Threading, which allows two threads to run simultaneously on each core. So an 8-core Mac Pro presents 16 virtual cores that are recognized by Mac OS X. This connection acts as a direct pipeline, so processor-to-processor data doesn’t need to travel to the I/O hub first. It’s another way the new Mac Pro boosts performance across the board.

No matter where you are on iPod touch, one press of the Home button takes you to the Home screen. You can also take a shortcut from any Home screen back to your first Home screen by pressing the Home button.

Whenever you download an application from the App Store, a new icon appears on your Home screen. iPod touch offers built-in wireless support for Nike + iPod. All you need to do is insert a Nike + iPod sensor into your shoe and start running.

iPod touch now includes built-in Nike + iPod support. Just slip the Nike + iPod Sensor (available separately) into your Nike+ shoe and start your run. The sensor communicates wirelessly with your iPod touch, tracking your time, distance, and calories burned. It even gives you voice feedback on your progress.

Tune your cardio workout.

This feature also works with new cardio equipment available in many fitness centers. Just look for Nike + iPod compatible treadmills, ellipticals, stair steppers, and stationary bikes.

When you get back to your computer, sync your iPod touch via iTunes and transfer your exercise data to nikeplus.com, where you can track your workouts, set goals, and challenge friends.

Volume Controls

Volume buttons are built into the left side of iPod touch, giving you easy access to the most frequently used controls.

Longer Battery Life

Now you can keep on rocking (and watching and playing) even longer. Improved battery life means iPod touch provides up to 36 hours of audio playback or 6 hours of video playback — enough to watch three or four movies between charges.

Multi Touch Screen

iPod touch features the same revolutionary interface as iPhone.

Glide, flick, pinch.

Built to take full advantage of the large 3.5-inch display, the Multi-Touch touchscreen interface lets you control everything using only your fingers. So you can glide through albums with Cover Flow, flick through photos and enlarge them with a pinch, zoom in and out on a section of a web page, and control game elements precisely.

How it works.

The Multi-Touch display layers a protective shield over a capacitive panel that senses your touch using electrical fields. It then transmits that information to the LCD screen below it. iPod touch software enables the flick, tap, and pinch.

Type with the touchscreen keyboard.

iPod touch features an intelligent touchscreen keyboard perfect for browsing the web in Safari, getting directions on a map, searching for videos on YouTube, finding music on the iTunes Store, or adding new contacts. It analyzes keystrokes to suggest words as you type and correct spelling errors automatically. And because it’s software based, it changes its keys to support typing in multiple languages.

Accelerometer

iPod touch responds to motion using a built-in accelerometer.

Responds to movement.

iPod touch detects when you rotate it from portrait to landscape, then automatically changes the contents of the display. So you immediately see the entire width of a web page, view a photo in its proper aspect ratio, or control a game using only your movements.

How it works.

The accelerometer inside iPod touch uses three elements: a silicon mass, a set of silicon springs, and an electrical current. The silicon springs measure the position of the silicon mass using the electrical current. Rotating iPod touch causes a fluctuation in the electrical current passing through the silicon springs. The accelerometer registers these fluctuations and tells iPod touch to adjust the display accordingly.

Perfect for gaming.

Accelerometer technology really shines when you play games because it immerses you in the action. It’s perfect for racing games, where your entire iPod touch acts as a steering wheel, and for tap-and-tilt games such as Super Monkey Ball, in which your character responds to your every movement.

Wireless Internet

Connect iPod touch to the Internet anywhere there’s a wireless network.

Connect automatically.

iPod touch locates nearby wireless hotspots, including protected networks. If you’ve never used a particular network, it asks you to enter a password the first time, and it remembers the password from then on. So the next time you’re within range, it connects automatically.

Surf’s up.

Now you can send email from a coffee shop. Surf the web at the airport. Shop for games from your couch. Browse, buy, and download music from the iTunes Store at select Starbucks locations or other wireless hotspots in your area.

Contacts

Put names, email addresses, phone numbers, and more at your fingertips.

Make contact.

Build your contacts list on your Mac with Address Book or on your PC with Microsoft Outlook, then sync everything to your iPod touch using iTunes. You can also add contact information directly to your iPod touch from maps, web pages, and email. Next time you sync, your computer is updated, too.

Search contacts.

If you have a lot of contacts, a quick search shows you a list of matching names to choose from. Or you can scroll up and down your entire list to find the right contact. Want to send them an email? Just tap an email address and the Mail application opens automatically.

Organized by groups.

If you keep your contacts organized into groups — such as coworkers, friends, family, and so on — iPod touch will, too. And iPod touch can hold more than just names, email addresses, and phone numbers. You can also track birthdays, websites, nicknames, and notes.

Calculator – Portable Budget

Calculator on iPod touch helps you settle the restaurant bill or keep track of your budget.

Calculate simply.

When you tap the Calculator icon, iPod touch shows you a simple application with addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and memory functions. Use it just as you would a pocket calculator.

Calculate scientifically.

Your simple calculator doubles as a sophisticated scientific calculator. Just rotate it to landscape to access dozens of functions for solving complex science and math problems.

Stocks, Weather, & Notes

Check stocks.

Stocks on iPod touch shows you performance information for any stock you choose. When you want more details about a stock’s performance, tap the Y! for instant access to Yahoo! Finance.

Get weather.

Check worldwide weather at home or away. Add the cities you want, then flick back and forth to get six-day forecasts for each. Tap the Y! to open a Yahoo! city guide that shows you what’s happening, rain or shine.

Take notes.

Forget the pen and paper. Use Notes on iPod touch to write yourself a quick note and keep important information on hand. There’s even a built-in email function that lets you send notes to yourself or others.

Calendar

With iPod touch, it’s easy to make plans and stay on schedule.

Add events.

Keep your schedule at your fingertips with iPod touch. Add events to your calendar. Set a custom alert. Write a note or two. Manage multiple color-coded calendars. All with a few taps.

Stay in sync.

Connect iPod touch to your computer and the events you’ve created on the go sync to Microsoft Outlook on a PC or iCal on a Mac. And all the events you’ve added on your computer sync to iPod touch.

Three ways to view.

iPod touch gives you three ways to view your calendars. List view shows you all your appointments in the coming days as a comprehensive list, which you can scroll up and down. Day view displays one day’s worth of appointments visually. And Month view offers an at-a-glance look at an entire month.

Autodesk SketchBook Express 2009, an industry leading sketching and drawing application, is now exclusively available on the Modbook as part of its standard software package.

NEW! Axiotron Quickflip allows users of NVIDIA-powered Modbooks to switch their screen rotation in 90-degree increments, going from landscape mode to portrait mode and back again. (Available soon at no charge for download to any NVIDIA-powered Modbook.)
